アリゾナ州の最大の観光スポットとして、日本人にも大人気のアンテロープ・キャニオン。
この地で暮らすインディアン・ナバホ族の手織りのラグマットです。

もともとは、儀式の際にメディスンマン（祈祷師）が描いていた砂絵。ナバホの神話にもとづいた聖なる山や人、穀物や動物など、様々なモチーフが描かれています。砂絵は精霊が降臨する場所と考えられ、儀式後には消されてしまうものでした。

その砂絵と同じモチーフが織られています。

【神話の世界】
ナバホ族には、世界の始まりを表す創世神話があり、口伝によって継承されてきました。一人の男と女が誕生するところから始まり、第一の世界から順を追って、現在の世界へたどり着きます。特に重要な動物として、コヨーテが登場します。彼らは賢く、強く、悪知恵の働く存在。砂絵にも、度々コヨーテが描かれています。

【聖なるモチーフ】
砂絵には太陽や大地、植物など、ナバホ族にとって大切なモチーフが描かれています。もっとも象徴的なのは、YEI（イェイ）と呼ばれる、人間と神の中間のような存在。すべてのものと調和し、生きていく術を教えてくれます。

【自然素材のアート】
ナバホ族のサンドペインティングは、自然に存在する材料だけを使って描かれます。近くで見ると、盛り上がった砂の重なりに見惚れてしまいます。細かな粒の集合体が描く、神秘の世界をぜひ間近でご覧ください。

Antelope Canyon, which is very popular with Japanese people as the largest tourist attraction in Arizona.
It is a hand-woven rug of the Indian Navajo people who live here.

Originally, a sand painting drawn by a medicine man (shaman) during the ceremony. Various motifs such as sacred mountains, people, grains and animals based on Navajo mythology are drawn. The sand painting was thought to be the place where the spirits descended and was erased after the ritual.

The same motif as the sand painting is woven.

[Mythical world]
The Navajo have a creation myth that marks the beginning of the world and has been passed down by oral tradition. Starting from the birth of one man and woman, we will reach the present world in order from the first world. A particularly important animal is the coyote. They are wise, strong, and wisdom-working beings. Coyotes are often depicted in sand paintings.


[Sacred motif]
The sand paintings depict important motifs for the Navajo, such as the sun, the earth, and plants. The most symbolic thing is the existence called YEI, which is somewhere between humans and gods. It teaches you how to live in harmony with everything.

Navajo sand painting is drawn using only naturally occurring materials. If you look closely, you will be fascinated by the pile of sand. Please take a closer look at the mysterious world drawn by a collection of fine grains.
